Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be highlighting some of the projects that are supported by Comic Relief here in the UK.
Research suggests young carers are more at risk of developing problems such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and self-harm into their adult life. Newent Initiative Trust aims to reduce these risks by providing respite for young carers aged 11-19 living in rural areas north of the Forest of Dean.
One evening a week during school term, it gives young carers a chance to forget about home life for a short time and enjoy life as an ordinary young person. Through its community youth café, the ChillOut, the project provides activities such as cooking, arts and craft, day trips and meals out, all of which are chosen by the young people.
A Comic Relief grant of £950 allows the project to continue its activities during school holidays to ensure young carers get access to respite and support throughout the year.
